What was the catalyst for starting TECMASK? Prior to starting TECMASK, Dad and I would travel a lot for work and we both seemed to always feel under the weather after flying. It got to the stage where every time I heard someone cough on the plane, I couldn’t help but think that I was going to get sick. The more we acknowledged this, the more we noticed how many people felt the same way about flying and have themselves fallen ill after a flight.
It all started when my father and I were travelling around Japan. We were exploring the city of Tokyo whilst trying to shake off a post-flight cold when we noticed how many people wore surgical masks and could appreciate the benefits behind its use. But there was just one thing that stood out…they were all plain white and clinical looking. And then the thought occurred to us. ‘Why can’t disposable face masks be both functional and fashionable?’. We thought that if we could make face masks look more stylish, they would be more enjoyable to wear whilst protecting one’s health. Especially in situations like travelling when you can’t afford to get sick! And so TECMASK was born.
What has been your biggest challenge about starting your business? The biggest challenge we have faced is bringing this concept to a country that is not familiar with the use of masks. Some people feel uncomfortable wearing a mask as they think they may be drawing attention to themselves or stand out in a crowd. However, at the end of the day, it’s a far cheaper investment than having to spend large sums of money on cold/flu tablets and antibiotics after coming down with something post-flight. And if you are able to wear something that helps prevent this outcome altogether, then all-the-better!
It’s clear that we are a health-conscious society that do all we can to stay healthy. And whether it be for work or leisure, travel is a huge part of the Aussie culture. Let’s face it, nobody has time to catch a cold or flu post-flight. So, we ask customers to consider our products as additional insurance to ensure we arrive at our end destination feeling healthy and happy!
What inspires you? My Dad. He’s not only my mentor but my hero!
What are you reading? I’m currently reading ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck’ by Mark Manson
What are you listening to? I’m loving my 80s funk music such The Whispers and Luther Vandross at the moment. Sometimes I throw in some Elton John to mix it up a bit.
What is your health and wellness philosophy? I think it’s super important to get up and do some form of exercise before work, even if it’s a light walk. Otherwise, I tend to arrive at work feeling sluggish and unmotivated. I’m someone who’s brain is constantly running at 100 miles an hour and have found that in that 1 hour of training I am able to shut my thoughts down and only focus on the exercises I am doing at that time. As weird as it sounds, it’s almost therapeutic. And on top of that, I make sure I drink at least 2L of water a day.
What are you loving at the moment that we wouldn’t know about you? Cooking! I have this new found love for trying to cook new recipes and forcing my friends and family to try it to see what they think. Can’t say I nail it every time but it’s enjoyable nonetheless. And the outcome is always surprising.
What's your favourite LYC juice? I have to say that the Cashew Nut Milk is a huge winner in my books. It’s so smooth and delicious! Whenever I am completing the 3-day juice cleanse, it is always the juice I look forward to having!! Also a great afternoon snack!
